
What a life! Sierra newts, Taricha torosa sierrae, return to small streams in the foothills in late winter and spring, to breed.
This photo was taken in March along the Yuba River, while taking a hike with my good friend & ornithologist Kristen. We watched this lively ball of individuals, most likely several males forming a ball around a female, competing to be the first to fertilize her eggs. Sometimes you'll see dozens of individuals in a stretch of streambed.
With amphibians in global decline, it is so refreshing to see some populations thriving.
